Spirit Falls — This is a must-see waterfall in late Spring when the rhododendrons are in full bloom. You have to walk to this one — but you follow a very easy footpath through a wealth of interesting, attractive flora — including the rhododendrons. At the base of the falls is a convenient picnic table set in an unbeatable atmosphere. Round trip is a little over a half mile.

Getting there is certainly pleasurable but seeing Spirit Falls is a wonderful bonus. Though perhaps not unique, this type of waterfall is unusual. Alex Creek hits a rock in the middle of the channel and creates a spray which spreads out, fan-like, giving the appearance of a fine, white, blowing lace curtain.

This area is part of the watershed for the city water supply of Cottage Grove and other communities. Camping, even swimming, is prohibited. There is camping at nearby Dorena Lake and Cottage Grove Lake.

Another warning (sorry!), — there are still some active mining claims in the area and the owners do not take kindly to trespassers of any kind for any reason. If you intend to do any hiking beyond the listed waterfalls you are strongly urged to check with the Cottage Grove Ranger Station (541-942-5591).

How to get there:

From I-5 exit 176 (East Cottage Grove Connector) head east toward Dorena Reservoir. (This road becomes Row River Road, designated also as Road #2400.) Continue on Row River Road for about 19.1 miles to Layng Creek Road (Road #17)and turn left. Continue for for 8.8 miles to road #1790 and turn right. Follow this for about 150 yards to the trailhead (on your right).
