ABOUT CANON CITY, CO
(SEE MAP)

Cañon City is a small community on US-50 about 38 miles west of Pueblo - or 48 miles south of Colorado Springs (via CO-115). Colorado has a lot of small communities harboring big attractions; Cañon City is such a community.

Buckskin Joe Frontier Town and Railway is a lively, fully decked-out western town sufficiently authentic to have been used as filming sites for several major productions (e.g., The Cowboys, Cat Ballou, and The Sacketts). Complete with live street shows and inevitable western gunfights, great musical entertainment, horse-drawn trolley rides and even horseback riding, they seem to cover all the bases. The Royal Gorge Railroad is extremely popular and serves frequent guests from Colorado Springs. After all, it is less than an hour away. As they say, step back in time and step up in excitement.

Buckskin Joes is open 9a - 6p daily May through September. For admission and additional information, phone 719-275-5149 or visit their web site at www.buckskinjoes.com.

Also in the vicinity of Cañon City is the Royal Gorge, Park and Bridge. While not exactly the Grand Canyon in sheer size, you just might find it more enjoyable. If you take a ride on the The Royal Gorge Railroad (see above) you will have a very good view as the route takes you to the upper rim of the gorge. The train runs from May through September. The ride takes about a half hour. For admission and additional information, phone 303-569-1041, or visit their web site at www.royalgorgebridge.com.

ABOUT CRIPPLE CREEK, CO
(SEE MAP)

  • Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad - a 45 minute ride into the heart of the gold mining district. For more information phone 1-719-689-2640 or visit their web site at CrippleCreekRR
  • Golden Loop Historic Parkway - a self guided tour you take in your own car if you don't care to take the narrow gauge train. (A guide booklet is available for about 50 cents.) For more information visit the web site at GoldenLoop
  • Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine - Here's your chance to view a real, working gold mine 1,000 under ground. Reputedly the "most complete perspective on gold mining in the world", you get to hear actual gold miners (not just some professional tour guides) tell of their experiences and what life digging underground is like. For more information, phone (toll-free) 1-877-858-GOLD or visit their web site at www.goldminetours.com.
  • Mueller State Park - The Yosemite of Colorado - so called because it also boasts a bald granite dome resembling Yosemite's 'Half Dome'. Just north of town, the park offers excellent camping and hiking trails. For more information, phone 719-687-2366 or visit their web site at MuellerStatePark.

ABOUT CASCADE'S NORTH POLE, CO
(SEE MAP)

A little way out (west) on US-24 from Colorado Springs is the community of Cascade. And right next to Cascade is a Christmas-themed amusement park called North Pole. Besides the more than two-dozen rides they put on several magic shows through the day. At the center of all this is Santa's North Pole - an ice-covered pole which (they say) never melts.

The place is very convenient if you are visiting Colorado Springs, on the way to Pikes Peak if that is one of your destinations, and just a short detour if you are just passing through on I-25.

Seasonal, of course, from May through Christmas Eve. (Gives Santa time to bang out a few more toys.) Entry fee for adults and children is $17.95 (under age 2, free). Those in their second childhood (60+) get in FREE! (Is this why so many of the kids are escorted by their grandparents?)

For more information, phone 719-684-9432, send an e-mail to santashelper@santas-colo.com or visit their web site at www.santas-colo.com.
